What's new online this week

Changing lives in our lifetime 29 May 2019 | International
Save the Children's third annual Global Childhood Report examines the major reasons why childhood comes to an early end, and found significantly fewer children suffering ill-health, malnutrition, exclusion from education, child labor, child marriage, early pregnancy and violent death. A comparison of End of Childhood Index scores finds the overall situation for children has improved in 173 out of 176 countries since 2000.
Child care and child outcomes: A comparison across European countries 29 May 2019 | Europe
This 2016 report using data from OECD’s PISA, Eurostat and World Bank’s WDI explores how child cognitive outcomes at the aggregate country level are affected by macroeconomic conditions, specifically government education expenditures. It also investigates how investments received in early life are linked to child educational outcomes when children are adolescents. The report finds that higher shares of the sample with pre-primary education in early years are associated with better later outcomes.
Early childhood education in Iran: Progress and emerging challenges 29 May 2019 | Asia
The current article details Iranian progress from opening the first publicly supported kindergarten in 1924 to today. Accompanying growth is a challenge in the area of preparing teachers for diversity, working with second language children and parents, and providing financial benefits that will attract and retain the brightest and best professionals. As these challenges are observed throughout the world this paper also calls for a global teacher-response to initiate greater dialogue in support of all children.
Exploring leave policy preferences: A comparison of Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States 29 May 2019 | International
This study published by the Social Politics journal analyses preferences regarding leave length, gender division of leave, and leave financing in four countries with different welfare-state and leave regimes. The results suggest that leave preferences in Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States are mostly shaped by the institutional context in which individuals are embedded.
Misspeaking childcare: The Ford government’s evidence vacuum 27 May 2019 | Ontario
Ontario childcare developments in the last few months have been so alarming, chaotic, and ill-informed they make your head spin. The assault on childcare began when the provincial government eliminated modest guidelines intended to temper rapid growth by profit-seeking childcare owners, then relaxed regulations to increase the ratio of children in private homes. Announced draconian cuts to childcare funding were temporarily reversed, however, when public and municipal outrage crossed party lines to wipe out most of the government's approval rating. Adding to the general migraine potential, the Ford government offered misinformation or downright fibs in response to objections. Indeed, the PC caucus' misstatements and double-speak have been downright Trumpian as they have served up bromides in response to concerns – whatever the evidence to the contrary.

Many social programs support families, but child care is the backbone of them all.
